The octopus paradox. The hypocrisy of animal welfare protection part I.As a preface and disclaimer: selling living octopus is commonplace in Southern Italy (and in whole Southern Europe probably) and the specific fishmonger here is not doing anything different than many of his fellow fishmongers.In Italy you can buy a living octopus, put it in a bag, bring it home and kill it whichever way you find most convenient in order to cook it. Too bad for the octopus, no legal consequences for you. At the same time, however, cephalopods are protected according the EU directive 2010/63. So, in Italy, if you want to dissect the very same octopus for scientific reasons and not to eat it (e.g. to make sections of its brain) you need to: 1. have followed specific courses on animal welfare and have passed the relative exams 2. have access to an authorized animal facility 3. write a 35-point document where you specificy what exact type of experiments you plan to do, why are they important and how many octopuses you plan to kill 4. submit said proposal to the animal welfare committee of your Institution and get an approval 5. wait for the animal welfare committee to submit said document to the Italian Ministry of Health 6. wait 40 working days and only in case you do not get a written objection from the Ministry you can proceed.Killing an octopus in the EU without proper authorization is a felony and can lead to a criminal trialhttps://lnkd.in/ddc9zr6K #animalwelfare #animaltesting #animalprotection #octopus #italianfood #science #europe
