Why is Guitar Center closing? ›

Did the guitar center go out of business? Guitar Center is still in business, they just came out of bankruptcy restructuring when Covid hit. Now they have massive supply chain issues, can't get guitars or basses or keyboards because of parts shortages, so their stores look like they are going out of business.

The company was founded in Hollywood in 1959 as The Organ Center, a retailer of electronic organs for home and church use, by Wayne Mitchell.

In the mid-2000s, the chain got infected with a common retail malaise: massive debt. In 2007, it got bought by the private equity firm Bain Capital, which borrowed heavily for the deal and saddled Guitar Center with the debt that by 2020 reached $1.3 billion.

'Wiped out' progress

Looming over the company during this year were maturities on some $1 billion in debt. The pandemic picked away at the retailer's finances. Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, Guitar Center reported 10 straight quarters of comparable sales growth.
