Manchester City closed the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to five points with victory over injury-ravaged Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The reigning champions struggled in the first half before two of manager Pep Guardiola's substitutes combined to break the deadlock after 63 minutes, Riyad Mahrez turning in Jack Grealish's low cross at the far post.

Chelsea enjoyed the better of the first half despite adding both former City forward Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic to a lengthening injury list, substitute Carney Chukwuemeka hitting the post from the edge of the area.

Graham Potter will justifiably point to Chelsea's ill-luck with absentees but the bottom line is this defeat leaves them in the unaccustomed position of 10th, 10 points off the Champions League places.

City, meanwhile, will be happy to get three points despite being nowhere near their best and on a rare night when scoring machine Erling Haaland failed to hit the target.

More from Manchester City winger Jack Grealish, talking to Sky Sports about how his move to Manchester City has panned out: "I’ve said before that is so different to what I was used to at Aston Villa. Dean Smith would tell me to go and find the weak link in the defence, whether that was on the right, the middle or whether I wanted to hug the touchline and just certain stuff - at Villa I always had an overlapping full-back.

"I came into City, having been at Villa my whole life, and I’ve never had to change. I’ve always been used to that. I didn’t realise how hard it was to adapt to a different team and manager. When I came here, I’ll be honest with you, it was so much more difficult than I thought.

"In my head I thought I was going to the team sitting top of the league and I was going to get so many goals and assists and obviously it isn’t the case. It is so much more difficult, a lot of teams do tend to sit in against us and that wasn’t the case at Villa.

"I sat there on the bench, watching the game and observing it and seeing what Phil [Foden] is doing in the sort of positions I’ll be in if I do come on. I always want to start of course, every player does. I’ve been here 18 months now, and I’m still getting used to it, I’ll be honest. I’m enjoying it though, it’s a great club and group of lads. It is obviously a pleasure to work under Pep [Guardiola].

"I’m so close to Riyad and we were saying we would love to come on here because the game felt more open. We’ve had games this season, Everton and Brentford recently for example, where they’ve had a back five and they’ve sat in against us.

"Against a back four today it just felt so much more open and we were saying we were desperate to come on. The manager told Riyad to go and warm up, but he didn’t actually tell me so I thought I’m going to warm up here and next minute Riyad was like 'come on Jack, we’re coming on' and I was like 'buzzing, see you later'."

Aaron: Said this for years- Chelsea are a cup team & have been since Mourinho left them in 2015. They play boring football, along with Liverpool, I don't see them getting near the top 4. Howay the lads!

Joe: Given the injuries and events off the field, this season is a bit of a write off for Chelsea - exemplified by Potter throwing on a bunch of youngsters (who actually looked quite good) for the final half an hour against the best side in the league.

  7. 'Positives with the performance'

    FT: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Premier League: Man City beat Chelsea to move five points off Arsenal (5)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Graham Potter, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It still hurts, we're disappointed but at the same time there were a lot of positives I suppose. There was a lot to like about our performance against a top opponent. We had courage, we had spirit, the boys gave everything. We had to adjust a couple of times early in the game, I thought we did that really well. At the same time we tried to ask Manchester City quastions in attack.

"I thought it was a tough game, an even game I would say. Obviously Manchester City have quality, you can see that from the bench they bring on, it affects the game of course. We're not in the same place because of different things.

"But overall the positives are there, I liked the team, the crowd reacted well to it. But we're disappointed to not get any points.

"I'm really pleased with our young players. They're just taking their first steps, it's a big step for them to represent Chelsea and try to compete and get into the starting XI. They've been working hard at training."

"As a team it's a step forward. We played well here against Bournemouth and we were disappointed against Nottingham Forest, again points-wise it's not good, but I am positive with the performance.

"Obviously everybody's disappointed because we don't win, but I think the crowd has stuck with the team and that's fantastic.

"It's too early to say with injuries. Raheem [Sterling] felt it with the first minute of the game. And then with Christian [Pulisic] we're hoping it's not too serious. No new transfer news but there's always news and speculation. Until they're here there's nothing else to comment on."

  9. 'Chelsea need to work out what they are'

    FT: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Premier League: Man City beat Chelsea to move five points off Arsenal (6)

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

With the greatest respect to the young players who came on and gave the team more energy and more urgency, Chelsea have been a club who have competed for and won the biggest of trophies.

Are these young kids going to win Chelsea a Premier League? Certainly not this season. They may be great players in years to come but Chelsea, or their owners, have always demanded virtually instant success and that makes them a different club to most.

When Frank Lampard took charge, a lot of Chelsea fans cut him some slack because they couldn't bring players in [due to a transfer embargo] and they were happy to see the young players come through, and that model is all right in theory but because of the demands of this club, Chelsea want to win trophies.

Are they going to do that with Hutchinson, Hall and other development players? I don't think so and Chelsea need to work out which team, which club they actually are. You look at the serious money they have spent in the summer - and more today on a young centre-half [Benoit Badiashile from Monaco] - and they want instant success, don't they? Otherwise why would you chuck all that money at it?

  10. 'Buzzing to get three points'

    FT: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Premier League: Man City beat Chelsea to move five points off Arsenal (7)

    Manchester City

Manchester City winger Jack Grealish talking to Sky Sports: "It was a tight one. I was just saying to Karen [Carney] off air that they’ve got a few injuries, and they had two right at the start as well, that it was one of those games, particularly for me sat on the bench, thinking we could dominate this but it wasn’t the case at all.

"It was a tough game. Chelsea played brilliantly, particularly in the first half, they probably had more chances. We got the goal and after that it was backs against the wall really. I’m just buzzing to come here and get three points because we know how tough it is to come here.

"Half-time was lively. I’m obviously not going to go into too much detail but the manager changed a few things and had a few words with us. We came out and for the first 25-30 minutes we dominated, had more chances and I think once we got the goal, it felt like we had control of the game.

"The manager told me to be aggressive and attack Azpilicueta and stay high and wide. It was weird, I was speaking to Riyad [Mahrez] inside and he said he thought the keeper was going to get it at one point and so did I. I’ve put my head down and crossed it and thought ‘nah, Erling’s got to be somewhere’.

"I’m just hitting it because he’s always in there, and I asked him and he said ‘everyone went in, so I pulled back’. I felt like the keeper was going to get it at one point. I’m going to praise my cross though! When it went across the goal I thought I’d played it too close to him."

  11. 'Perfect centre-back to play under Pep'

    FT: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Premier League: Man City beat Chelsea to move five points off Arsenal (8)

    Izzy Christiansen

Everton and England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

    John Stones has been excellent.

There was a time when he had a dip for City and we thought he was possibly going to be leaving.

But he's definitely their most reliable defender, the way he reads the game, he's the perfect centre-back to play under Pep and he showed it again tonight.

He made that block in the first half from Pulisic - if he doesn't make that block, it's a goal and it's a different game.

  12. 'In the first half everything was sloppy'

    FT: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Premier League: Man City beat Chelsea to move five points off Arsenal (9)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It's always difficult coming here to Stamford Bridge. We had to find our best like we were in the second half.

"In the first half everything was sloppy, we had no rhythm, when we arrived in the positions we were not good.

"But we got better when Rico [Lewis] came in, he has the ability and talent to make our game better. Most of the players play good, but he has the ability to play good but make the others play better. As a midfield player that talent is extraordinary.

"Of course Chelsea have a lot of absentees, top quality injured players. Then in the first minute they lose Raheem [Sterling] so it was not easy. But they are Chelsea, you cannot expect to come here and win the game, especially the way we played in the first half. That was not good.

"Well it could be seven points, or 10 or eight, but now the gap is five points. We have to look at ourselves but I have to admit, the way they are playing, Arsenal deserve to be there. It's not just about the points, the way they are playing. Even when they lost against [Manchester] United and drew with Newcastle, the quality and the level they are playing is so good."

  13. Post update

    FT: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Manchester City have now won each of their last four meetings with Chelsea in all competitions without conceding a single goal in the process.

It's only the second time ever that Chelsea have both lost and failed to score in four straight meetings with a particular side, after doing so against Bolton from 1958 to 1960.

  14. 'Chelsea are a mid-table team'

    FT: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Premier League: Man City beat Chelsea to move five points off Arsenal (10)

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

All things being equal, you need more than just pride and passion - Chelsea need better quality and that's the issue for them this season. Is that display good enough? You look at the table and Chelsea are behind Brentford, they are behind Fulham, they are a mid-table team.

Whatever happened at the start of the season - the takeover, the change of manager - Chelsea shouldn't be 10th in the Premier League halfway through a season. That, quite frankly, isn't good enough.

If Graham Potter doesn't turn things around extremely quickly, I don't see him lasting and I don't see the patience being there among this Chelsea support as well. I think a lot of Chelsea fans have made their mind up about him already and that's not going to change.

One win in eight in the Premier League, that isn't anywhere near good enough. They are miles off fourth spot and they would have to go on an incredible run - performance-wise, can you see Chelsea going on a run like that, with 20 goals all season? Are they going to flick a switch and address that overnight?

I know at Brighton that his team, at times, struggled to score goals and then all of a sudden it clicked but he had time there, there was a different outlook, he could build. You don't get time at Chelsea to build or managers haven't done in the past.

  15. Absent Aubameyang

    FT: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Conor Gallagher and Omari Hutchinson, who came on in the 68th and 69th minutes for Chelsea actually both managed a touch of the ball more (15) each than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (14).

  16. 'We worked really hard'

    FT: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Premier League: Man City beat Chelsea to move five points off Arsenal (11)

    Chelsea

Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka speaking to Sky Sports:“My heart skipped as I took the shot [which hit the post]. I thought it was in but obviously it wasnot meant to be today.

“We worked really hard out of possession and limited theirchances and caused them some problems so I think we did have the better firsthalf but we couldn’t find a goal.

“I feel like because of how young I am, I don’t haveanything to lose I can just express myself and I think that’s the same with theothers. It’s a big opportunity to build on and try and break into the teambecause of the injuries.”

Andy: Chelsea losing two players early on made the difference. Bringing on Auba then subbing him off really sums up the state of their squad.

Marc: Everyone blaming Potter, give your heads a wobble. Chelsea go through managers like most of us go through hot dinners. Add to that their injury list and the "gelling" period required, success takes time. Potter isn't the problem.

  18. Rock Stones

    FT: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

John Stones got the man of the match and these are some of the impressive stats from the Manchester City and England centre-half...

    • Duels won - 7
    • Aerial duels won - 4 of 4
    • Possession won - 4
    • Tackles won - 1
    • Interceptions - 1
    • Clearances - 4
    • Fouls won - 1
    • Touches - 102
    • Accurate passes - 85 of 87 (98%)
    • Passes in final third - 14

  19. 'You have to try and ride out any storm'

    FT: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City

Premier League: Man City beat Chelsea to move five points off Arsenal (14)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Graham Potter speaking to Sky Sports: “Whenyou consider everything losing Raheem [Sterling] and Christian [Pulisic] so early, the lads gaveeverything. It was a spirited performance against a top team, so apart from theresult I’m proud of the players.

“It’s tough at the moment I must admit and I feel for theboys. We have to stick together. It was disappointing to lose those guys butthe players on the pitch and the ones that came in gave everything and that’sall you can ask for.

“I thought we committed too many men too high to press themand that opened us up and then you have to credit their quality. In any goalyou feel you can do a little bit better but you have to credit Manchester City.

“We can’t complain about it [the injury list] We just have to get on with it.The boys on the pitch gave everything and did what we asked them to do andManchester City don’t give you much.

“We had to freshen it up but Lewis [Hall] and Amari [Hutchinson] are youngplayers starting out and Conor [Gallagher] gave everything, it was nice to have thatpersonality from the bench.

“You always have to take responsibility but you hope peoplelook at the whole context and see where we are and what we have had to dealwith but at the same time emotions are high and you have to try and ride outany storm and try to stay level. The crowd were behind the team and could seethem doing everything.”

Thomas: Looking forward to this title race. Refreshing to see Man City not just running the away with it. The next set of matches are going to be crucial, huge derbies, and don’t forget the head to head matches. The master vs the apprentice. The best league in the world.

Nathan: I really don’t understand why everyone is calling for Potter's head - the recruitment of players over many years is the issue. Tonight wasn’t an easy win game… give him time!
