The first tab of the options sidebar, the Story tab, is your first step in starting your NovelAI adventure. From here you can select which AI Model you wish to use, select a Config Preset, fill out Memory and Author's Note information, and more! Quickly search for lorebook entries from the Lorebook Quick Access bar, view story statistics, and export or delete your story file, all from one handy location on the right side of the Editor.
Right at the top of the Story tab is your AI Model selector, where you can choose from our collection of fine-tuned and experimental models!
Clicking the Change Default button takes you to the AI Settings menu and allows you to select your default story model, preset, module, as well as which model you would like to use for Lorebook generation. Default settings you choose in the AI Settings menu will carry over when you create a new story.
Goose Tip: Make sure to check your default settings often, when new AI models and features release they must be set in this menu!
AI Modules are a powerful tool to focus the AI to your desired genre, setting, or world. Influential authors, stylistic focuses, specific themes, text adventures and more. With over 60 different modules to choose from, the possibilities are endless! Click the All Modules button to view the full library of modules with descriptions, including custom ones that you have imported! You may also delete models from the dropdown using this menu.

The Config Preset dropdown contains saved and imported user presets, along with the recommended set of defaults that come with each model! Clicking the Edit Preset button takes you to the Config Settings tab, where you can make adjustments to your AI Generation Settings.
Goose Tip: Switching your preset might help get the AI back on track if the AI completely goes off the rails, outputs nonsense, or begins to loop!
The Memory Box allows you to store information that you want the AI to remember. Use it to store broad details related to your current setting, your character, their companions and what has previously happened in your story. Updating this field with important story elements as they take place will help the AI stay more consistent!
By default, information typed in Memory is placed at the top of your Story Context before anything else.
Goose Tip: The Memory Box can be used nearly any way you want, and is entirely optional if you don't feel like using it! Try experimenting and see what works best for you!
Information entered in the Author's Note box is one of most recent things the AI sees in your Story Context. The Author's Note is inserted much more recently in context than Memory by default, and functions like a supercharged version of it! Use a few short sentences to describe what you wish to happen, details of the story you want the AI to focus on, or anything else you can think of to nudge the AI's output in your desired direction. Update this box diligently, as anything entered in this box has a very strong effect on the AI.
The Lorebook Quick Access search bar allows you to quickly search for, view, and edit the text in lorebook entries right from the story tab without opening the lorebook itself! Use it to quickly make changes to entries or double check information without covering up the Editor.
Clicking the View Story Stats button opens a window full of technical information about your story, as well as Experimental Options for quickly trimming or formatting your story!
Each bit of AI output, user input, or edited text is counted as a Data Block; the total number of Data Blocks and a breakdown of their origin is available at the top of the stats window. Each output counts as a Step, with Dead Ends being any time you manually delete a branch of undone outputs or retries. A count of individual text characters and Most Used Words are also available in the top half of the window.
Clicking the Generate Additional Stats button also gives you a word, paragraph, and sentence count for your current story, as well as a top ten list of most used words!
- Trim Story
The Trim Story button removes any Branches of undos/redos/retries from your story, leaving only what appears in your Story Context and Editor window. Use this option to trim any unwanted branches of outputs when saving your story as a .story file.
- Flatten Story
The Flatten Story button removes all undo/retry history and branches from your story, essentially treating all of your current story text as a starting prompt again.
- Reset to Prompt
Pressing the Reset to Prompt button cuts everything in the editor back to what you entered as a starting prompt. This also removes all branches and history from your story.
Remote Storage
The Remote Storage toggle switches your story from being stored locally to being stored on NovelAI's servers. Use this toggle to carry stories between different browsers or platforms, such as mobile and desktop!
Goose Tip: All remotely stored stories are fully encrypted and only accessible by your account!
It is recommended to keep Remote Storage enabled just in case. Better safe than sorry!
Export Story
You can export your NovelAI story in a number of different ways, either to store locally or share with others! Want to share your story with others? Use the As Scenario option to create a customizeable .scenario file for easy interactive sharing. You can even save your story as a customizeable .jpg or .png screenshot using the As Image button!
- To File
Using the To File button saves your story as a .story file, with all current story branches and history inside. If you share your story as a .story file all undoes and retries will be visible!
- As Scenario
Exporting your story with the As Scenario button saves your story as a unique .scenario file. Importing a .scenario file into NovelAI opens up an interactive popup each time, allowing you to set tags, display a quick description, and even include user-defined placeholders for user-customizeable stories!
- As Plaintext
Use the As Plaintext export option to save a .txt file with only your story text. This option does not save anything but raw story text, for easy viewing on other devices or editors.
- To Clipboard
The To Clipboard option exports your full story file to the clipboard, and unlike the As Plaintext option, this one carries your extra story data with it. This option can be quite slow, especially on larger stories.
- As Image
Clicking the As Image button opens the Screenshot Designer, an interface you can use to generate a personalized screenshot of your story for stylish sharing! These images can't be imported, but are a great way to show off your storycrafting skills and impressive AI outputs.
Goose Tip: You can also screenshot sections of text using this designer by right-clicking in the editor after highlighting text!
Delete Story
The Delete Story button deletes your story. There is no way to recover deleted stories, so make sure you actually want to erase it before confirming it within the popup window!
